Editing Perspectives

Use the Edit Perspective dialog edit a perspective to rename it or to toggle the visibility of items from its base cube.

Before you begin

  • Ensure that you have either the right permission or authority. To edit a perspective of a cube, you must have the Update permission on the cube, be an administrator for your AtScale organization, or be a super user.
  • Open the cube for which you want to edit one or more perspectives.

About this task

If you are editing a perspective to hide one or more items that are already visible in a published version of that perspective, those items will be visible to in those published versions until the project is re-published.

If you add items to a cube after you have published a perspective, those new items will be visible to users of the perspective until you have edit the perspective to hide the new items and then re-published the project.

In both of these cases, users who have been querying previously published versions of the perspective must either connect to the newly published version or refresh their connection to the perspective, depending on how their client BI application connects to the perspective. Otherwise, those users will receive errors when their queries refer to items that are newly hidden. Also, those users will not be able to run queries that refer to items that are newly visible.

To change who has permission to query a perspective from a client BI application, see Granting Runtime Permissions on Perspectives.

Procedure

  1. Open the Perspectives panel by clicking the "binoculars" icon on the toolbar.
  2. Double-click the name of the perspective that you want to edit. The Edit Perspective dialog opens.
  3. Make your changes and click Save.

What to do next

  1. View the visible items in the Preview pane to verify that the perspective will appear as you want it to appear in client BI applications. Open this pane by clicking the "eye" icon in the toolbar on the Cube Designer canvas. In the drop-down menu, select the name of the perspective.

  2. Change who is granted runtime permissions on the perspective, if you need to change the list of users who are granted these permissions. See Granting Runtime Permissions on Perspectives.

  3. Publish the perspective. The perspective is not available for querying until the project in which it is located is published.

  4. Notify users who might be querying previous versions of the perspective that they must now follow these steps:

    1. If they are using Tableau Desktop, they must download a new .tds file.
    2. Disconnect from and then reconnect to the perspective.
